44th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, US Civil War.
[edit]On the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, in one of the decisive engagements of the battle, the regiment successfully defended the peak of Little Round Top. The regimental monument, located on the peak of the hill, contains the names of all of its members engraved on tablets within its walls, including Lora Hudson Bissell, regimental nurse. This is the only instance of the name of a female member of a participating regiment appearing on a Gettysburg monument.
